Blues Matters Magazine issue 113 Review

I Think if we were all to be honest then most folk would say there is just something rather special about the 'power trio' set up .Whether you are seeing those wowing thousands in stadiums throughout the world or strutting their stuff in some small club the simplicity of three musicians working their collective butts off really stirs the emotions. So it is with the DEBB. Ten cuts all originals, come at you relentlessly. The music is a fine mix of Delta influence and resonator backed Prayer for a friend to pure British Blues driving hard as with Honey Pot. Tasty stuff Appropriately for a band Travelin' Man gets things underway and immediately you know what will follow will not disappoint .Very good indeed.

BLUES MATTERS Magazine issue 38 Review

Dave Ellis 'Dallas In Four' demonstrates perfectly why the Blues is lovingly handed down from one generation to generation. On an album that is predominantly covers-only the title track is an original-Ellis has done nothing more than inject his own passion for the music. In so doing he has made Robert Johnson's 'Phonograph Blues' and the traditional 'Motherless Child' amongst others, all his own. The Blues is delightfully rough and ready, almost as if it were plucked from some field recording made a century ago-this is the Blues in its most natural, powerful and evocative form, but it takes a great deal of skill and pure talent to make music that sounds as homespun and then make it work so well. Ellis is clearly a talented guitarist and his voice, while not the most powerful instrument on show, is an honest vehicle for some classics, he manages to form and maintain an instant bond with the listener.

Blues Matters Magazine issue 38 Review

"Long Time Gone" features 18 tracks, culled from twenty years of gigging. The songs, picked by Ellis himself, range from Stevie ray Vaughan's Pride an' Joy to Robert Johnson's Walking Blues, the full spectrum covered by a band who have gained a deserved reputation for delivering, and delivering goes to the heart of the Dave Ellis Blues band. A life spent on the road has not only given it's members a clear idea of what they, as musicians do well but also what the audience expects. One of the beauties of Long Time Gone is derived from so much of it being live, Boogie Chillen/ La Grange is an epic that takes on a life of it's own. Many of the recordings on this album are barely above bootleg quality and the better for it. Liquor Store Blues, with its crowd noise and uneven sound, provides the peak of the album, a true live performance by musicians who love what they do. The Blues isn't meant to be pristine or perfect, it's about guts and heart- The Dave Ellis Band displays plenty of both.

Blues Matters Magazine issue 6 Review

With a set of two parts, in the first he's the delta doctor, paying serious homage to blues legends Robert Johnson, Skip James and Fred McDowell.

Then its on with the Stevie Ray hat and some blistering fretwork in the great mans unmistakable style. Lots of energy, foot stomping, whoopin' an a hollerin', everybody's getting down like you wouldn't believe! . Al Tait

BLUES MATTERS Magazine issue NO6 Review

forty minutes of quality Delta Blues from Dave and his Epiphone resonator. Twelve tracks, eleven of which are delta classics the other no less of a classic, Peter Greens 'world keeps on turning'. Robert Johnson gets a good seeing too over four tracks but it's the second and third track which best show Dave's qualities. 'Empire State Express' and 'Out on the western plain' are well known through dear departed Mr Gallagher's playing and Dave gives us a superb rendition of both. I particularly like 'The World Keeps On Turning' as Dave keeps the main theme alive whilst putting his own stamp on the piece as he does with all the tracks. Woody Guthrie's 'Vigilante Man is given the treatment it deserves, deep and soulful. This is a very personal sounding album played totally in the right spirit.
